         An operating system, or OS, is a software program that enables the computer hardware to communicate and operate with the computer software. Without a computer operating system a computer would be useless.

           The most important program that runs on a computer. Every general-purpose computer must have an operating system to run other programs. Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers. Operating System is Single user and Multi Tasking. Version of O.S. is as: Win95, Win98, Win Me, Win XP, Win XP Unlimited, Win Vista, Win NT, Win 2k, Win Server, Win Server Exchange, Win 7, Win8, Win 8.1, Win 10 etc. 

Classification of Operating System

The Operating System can be classified into two types: 

• Character User Interface (CUI)

• Graphical User Interface (GUI) Character

Character User Interface (CUI) 

          Character User Interface (CUI) does not have any icons or images; it works using only text and characters. You can perform tasks on CUI by giving commands in texts such as RENAME, CLS, CD, MD and DIR or directory. An example of a CUI is Disk Operating System (DOS). 

Graphical User Interface (GUI)

A Graphical User Interface has a background picture as well as many icons.Following are the examples of GUI:

Microsoft Windows

       Microsoft windows is a series of software operating systems and  graphical user interfaces produced by Microsoft.Microsoft developed the graphical user interface (GUI) base operating system for the first time. In which all the work was started graphically. Ms Dos was removed as an add-on in the market in November 1985 by adding Windows Operating. Leading Microsoft Windows Mac OS X came to dominate the world's personal computer market, which was first introduced. As of October 2009, Windows Operating System had about 91% share of market share for use on the Internet.The most recent client version of Windows is Windows7, the most recent server version is Windows Server 2008 R2; the most recent mobile device version is Windows Mobile 6.5.
