2- Second Generation (1955 - 1964) Transistors
This generation using the transistor were cheaper, consumed less power, more compact in size,
more reliable and faster than the first generation machines made of vaccum tubes.In this generation,
magnetic cores were used as primary memory and magnetic tape and magnetic disks as secondary
storage devices. In this generation assembly language and high level programming language like
FORTRAN, COBOL were used.
There were Batch processing and Multi programming Operating system used.
The main features of Second Generation are:
>> Use of Transistors
>> Reliable as compared to First generation computers
>> Smaller size as compared to First generation computers
>> Generate less heat as compared to First generation computers
>> Consumed less electricity as compared to First generation computers
>> Faster than first generation computers
>> Still very costly
>> A.C. needed Support machine and assembly languages

>> CDC 3600
>> UNIVAC 1108
ट्रांजिस्टर का उपयोग करने वाली यह पीढ़ी सस्ता थी, कम बिजली की खपत होना, आकार में अधिक छोटा होना, वैक्यूम ट्यूबों की पहली पीढ़ी मशीन की तुलना में अधिक विश्वसनीय और तेज थी। इस पीढ़ी में चुंबकीय कोर को प्राथमिक मेमोरी और चुंबकीय टेप और चुंबकीय डिस्क के माध्यम से माध्यमिक भंडारण उपकरणों का प्रयोग किया जाता था। इस पीढ़ी के कम्प्यूटर में एसेम्बली लैगवेज व हाई लेवल लैगवेज जैसेः फोरट्रान, कोबोल का इस्तेमाल किया जाता था।
बैच प्रसंस्करण और मल्टीप्रोग्राफिक ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम का इस्तेमाल किया गया था।
दूसरी पीढ़ी के कम्प्यूटर की मुख्य विशेषताएं हैं-
>> ट्रांजिस्टर का उपयोग होना।
>> पहले पीढ़ी के कंप्यूटर की तुलना में विश्वसनीय होना।
>> पहले पीढ़ी के कंप्यूटर की तुलना में छोटा आकार का होना
>> पहले पीढ़ी के कंप्यूटर की तुलना में कम गर्मी उत्पन्न करना।
>> पहले पीढ़ी के कंप्यूटर की तुलना में कम बिजली खपत होना।
>> पहले पीढ़ी के कंप्यूटर्स से ज्यादा तेज चलना।
>> अभी भी बहुत महंगा होना।
>> ए.सी. की सहायता मशीन और असेंब्ली भाषाएं आवश्यक होना।
