3- Third Generation (1965 - 1974) IC (Integrated Circuits)
The third generation of computer is marked by the use of Integrated Circuits (IC's) in place of transistors. A single I.C has many transistors, resistors and capacitors along with the associated circuitry. The I.C was invented by Jack Kilby. This development made computers smaller in size, reliable and efficient. In this generation Remote processing, Time-sharing, Real-time, Multi-programming Operating System were used. High level language (FORTRAN-II TO IV, COBOL, PASCAL PL/1, BASIC, ALGOL-68 etc.) were used during this generation.
The main features of Third Generation are:

>> More reliable
>> Smaller size, Generate less heat
>> Faster
>> Lesser maintenance
>> Still costly
>> A.C needed
>> Consumed lesser electricity
>> Support high level language

कंप्यूटर की तीसरी पीढ़ी ट्रांजिस्टर के स्थान पर इंटीग्रेटेड सर्किट (आईसी) के उपयोग से चिह्नित होती है। एक एकल आईसी में कई ट्रांजिस्टर, प्रतिरोधी और कैपेसिटर जुड़े सर्किटरी के साथ होते हैं। आईसी को जैक कल्बी द्वारा आविष्कार किया गया था।
इस विकास ने कंप्यूटर को आकार, विश्वसनीय और कुशल में छोटा बनाया। इस पीढ़ी में रिमोट प्रोसेसिंग, समय-साझाकरण, रीयल-टाइम, मल्टी प्रोग्रामिंग ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम का इस्तेमाल किया गया था।
इस पीढ़ी के दौरान उच्च स्तरीय भाषा (फोरट्रान-टू टू आईवी, कोबोल, पास्कल पीएल 1, बेसिक, एल्गोल-68 आदि) का उपयोग किया गया था।
तीसरी जनरेशन की मुख्य विशेषताएं हैं-
>> आईसी इस्तेमाल किया जाने लगा।
>> अधिक विश्वसनीय था ।
>> छोटे आकार होना व कम गर्मी उत्पन्न करना।
>> तेज चलना।
>> कम रखरखाव करना।
>> अभी भी महंगा होना।
>> एसी की जरूरत होती थी।
>> कम बिजली की खपत।
>> उच्च स्तरीय भाषा का प्रयोग करना।
